quality of teaching in Latvian schools: improving curricula and
enhancing teacher education.
J.H.
Guleke was a proficient Latvian speaker, whose works show that he
knew and collaborated with Rubene pastor K. Harder and Rujiena pastor
G. Bergmann in the preparation of hymnals and other publications.
This acquaintance allows to assume that he was one of the
contributors to the collection of Latvian folk songs compiled and
published by G. Bergmann "Second Collection of Latvian Folk Wisdom and Epigrams",
which is one of the first publications of folk song collections.
J.H.
Guleke was interested in the surroundings and history of Burtnieki.
Based on his records, as well as the notes of the successor and
son-in-law Wilhelm Friedrich Parrot, the academic of the St.
Petersburg Academy of Sciences George Friedrich Parrot wrote "Essai
sur les assements fossil des bord de Burtneck, etc." (Reflection
on the remains of extinct animals on the shores of Lake Burtnieki).
He
was called the Old Guleke at the end of his life to differentiate
himself from his son.
