The International Drama Contest and Festival TALKING ABOUT BORDERS is an annual event established

in 2005 for countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

For 2017/2018 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will be the partner countries for both, the contest and

the festival. TALKING ABOUT BORDERS is one of the most renowned and established drama contests

in Eastern Europe. Authors in the partnering countries are invited to send in their plays, out of

which a jury of cultural professionals and experts will nominate a winner who will be given a prize of

3.500 €, a professional translation into German language, as well as a granted debut performance at

the Theater Regensburg in the season 2018/2019. @@@@

The "Latvian Literature" platform has issued a large format book of fiction for children titled "The Horse" ("Zirgs"). The catalogue comprises works by 20 Latvian writers and book artists of different generations and is intended as a visual material to present contemporary Latvian illustrators and authors of children's literature to book industry professionals worldwide. A limited number of copies will be available in stores. @@@@

Latvian author Ineses Zandere’s stories about Shammies, made especially vivid and unique with the wonderful illustrations by Reinis Pētersons, are loved by children in Latvia and abroad. In 2016, the first of the stories “How the Shammies Swapped” (2011, Liels un Mazs) was published in Estonia, and in 2017 “Shammies' Morning” (2015, Liels un Mazs) became available in Arabic. @@@@

The number of translations of Latvian literature is growing. Liāna Langa’s collection of poems has been published in Sweden, an anthology of contemporary Latvian poetry in Germany, and Arvis Viguls’ poems have been included in “Mantis”, the American journal of poetry, criticism and translations. Translations of several Latvian classics have also been recently published in Latvia – a bilingual edition of Knuts Skujenieks’ collection “Basās zvaigznes/Босые звезды” (“Barefooted Stars”) in Latvian and Russian, and Aleksandrs Čaks “Touched by Eternity” in English. @@@@

The Annual Latvian Literature Award ceremony was held this Friday, 21st April 2017, in the "Daile" music hall where winners in five categories were announced and awarded, and the Special Award was given to Anita Rožkalne, and Uldis Bērziņš was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. @@@@

In an award ceremony hosted by the National Library of Latvia, on 28th March, the most beautiful books published last year in Latvia were presented with the Golden Apple Tree awards (“Zelta ābele”). An award for lifetime contribution to the Latvian literature and publishing industry was given to the long-standing director of the National Library, Andris Vilks, and the artist of the year award – to Ineta Berkmane. @@@@
